New Horizons is the first mission to the Kuiper Belt, a gigantic zone of icy bodies and mysterious small objects orbiting beyond Neptune. This region also is known as the “third” zone of our solar system, beyond the inner rocky planets and outer gas giants. Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland, designed, built and operates the New Horizons spacecraft, and manages the mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Year of Pluto — NASA New Horizons is a one hour documentary which takes on the hard science and gives us answers to how the mission came about and why it matters. Interviews with Dr. James Green, John Spencer, Fran Bagenal, Mark Showalter and others share how New Horizons will answer many questions. New Horizons is part of the New Frontiers Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

For over four and a half thousand years the pyramids of Egypt have stood as wonders of the world. The facts are astonishing, the Great Pyramid alone weighs almost six million tons and contains over 2.3 million stone blocks. Naked Science sets out to uncover four great mysteries that still surround the pyramids, how were they built, who built them, why were they built, and what secrets may still lie hidden within their stones. As four millennia and countless generations stand between us and the men who built the pyramids we have to study the buildings themselves to uncover the answers.

With British engineer Denys Stocks we learn the art of pyramid building. Stocks has spent twenty years mastering the techniques used by the ancient workmen and shows how such vast quantities of stone were quarried, transported and fitted by a civilisation that had not even invented the wheel. To show the scale of the achievement we asked construction manager and pyramid scholar Craig Smith to calculate what it would take to build a pyramid in today’s money.

We may know the names of the pharaohs who commissioned the pyramids but who actually hauled the blocks. Legends have always held that slaves built the pyramids but we venture into the science of Forensic Egyptology to discover the truth. Mark Lehner discovered the town of the pyramid builders while Zahi Hawass takes us on a tour of their tombs.

There may be few records of how the pyramids were built but hieroglyphic texts within some pyramids hint at their reveal purpose. Salima Ikram and Jim Allen help us find for the reason why the pyramids were built within these spells and incantations. However Robert Bauval, believes there may be deep connections between the pyramids and astronomy. He believes links to the stars are hidden within their stones and chambers.

Finally we follow work in pyramid exploration as teams hunt for hidden chambers and use robots to explore the mysterious shafts at the centre of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

We really do live in a privileged moment and we have a remarkable opportunity to shape the future. Finding alien life will contextualize our own existence, and open our eyes to what else nature has dreamt up beyond our ourselves, potentially bestowing huge breakthroughs in science, technology, and philosophy.

Seit einigen Jahrzehnten häufen sich die Klimakatastrophen auf unserem Planeten. Besonders stark haben die Flutkatastrophen in großen Städten zugenommen – der Meeresspiegel steigt, während die Städte absinken. Viele Städte, darunter New York, sind unzureichend geschützt. Weltweit machen Forscher, Ingenieure, Ökonomen und Stadtplaner gegen diese globale Bedrohung mobil.

Seit dem Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts häufen sich die Klimakatastrophen auf unserem Planeten. Besonders stark haben in den vergangenen Jahren die Flutkatastrophen in den großen Küstenmetropolen zugenommen. Erst vor kurzem zeigte sich am Beispiel von New York, Bangkok und New Orleans, wie schutzlos die 130 Megacitys dieser Welt den Launen des Meeres ausgesetzt sind. Hinzu kommt, dass der Boden unter den Megalopolen zunehmend nachgibt. Städte an Flussmündungen sacken regelrecht in sich zusammen.
Schuld daran ist der Mensch: Gründe sind exzessives Abpumpen des Grundwassers, Staudämme, rasant wachsende Megalopolen und sogenannte Bodenverflüssigung, wovon besonders Tokio bedroht ist.
Während die Städte absinken, steigt der Meeresspiegel weiter an. Diese zwei Phänomene hängen zwar nicht zusammen, verschlimmern jedoch beide die Überschwemmungen in den Küstenstädten. Wenn die politisch Verantwortlichen nicht schnell reagieren, könnte die nächste Sturmflut viele Todesopfer nach sich ziehen. Manche Wissenschaftler gehen davon aus, dass der Mensch diese Städte eines Tages verlassen muss. Bis dahin gilt es, sich effizient vor dem Meer und vor allem vor Sturmfluten zu schützen.
Heute entstehen weltweit Initiativen, um große Überschwemmungen besser zu managen und die Schäden zu begrenzen. Abgesehen von den menschlichen und materiellen Verlusten verursachen Überschwemmungen gewaltige Kosten für die Weltwirtschaft und stellen für die betroffenen Staaten ein Fass ohne Boden dar. Denn diese müssen nicht nur die Schäden reparieren, sondern auch die internationalen Handelsverluste auffangen.
